Re worked - A Precious Gift
By audrie
09 July 2007

When I put out the first writing of this poem, I was expecting a lot of stick!

But I am very pleased that it has been received so well.

However, Josie pointed out to me that the verses were all different lengths,
something I've never bothered with before, but I have added a couple more lines
to make them all six lines and I have to admit it does gel better.

Hope you like the new version.

A child sat in a garden alone
beside a rose-bush, overgrown.
Warm in the heat of the glorious sun
feeling that she and nature were one
when, out of the sunbeams six fairies flew
Oh, their wings were a glorious shimmering blue.

They danced and floated in a cloud of light
entrancing the child in pure delight.
As the beautiful creatures held her enthralled
a marvellous love of these beings, so small,
filled her with wonder and would be a part
Of the magic forever sealed in her heart.

She was too young to know what love was about
But she wanted to sing and started to shout,
to her mother and sisters, of what she had seen
of the beautiful fairies and where they had been.
But her mother and sisters, alas, would not listen,
they laughed so much it made their eyes glisten.

The child turned away and shed bitter tears.
She knew she'd remember this moment for years
and the precious gift that she had been given
Would be locked in her heart, forever hidden.
Until this moment when she has told you.
Now, are you going to laugh at her, too?

I think sorting the 'serene' line out was a good idea Audrie. I think I said before: this isn't one of my preferred styles of poetry, but it tells your story well.
