Purple

Purple
is the colour of oppression,
ignorence, subservence,
the colour of the
dictators of the mind,
of pomp and circumstance
but never freedom.

Not one of your harder-hitting ones Bernie - too many abstract nouns like "subservience", which tend to work against poetic power. I'm sure you could think of lots of specific examples that would enable you to say this more effectively.
thanks

... possibly mistakenly , that purple was a colour favoured by female liberationists .

springs to mind when you mention purple, 'tis the traditional altar-cloth colour for the time of year [pomp and circumstance, it's true].

Interesting, this associaton of purple with self-deprivation, and then a poem about freedom. Not so hard hitting, but intriguing nonetheless...

to patterjack and no1, I was thinking in terms of the Roman Empire, the Catholic Church, and lest but not last Royality.

Thanks again Guys.

I thought of bishops, so in that respect it worked for me.

(Also that well known poem I can't remember!)

I think FP makes a good point on this one.

The Colour Purple

It would be interesting to see you expound on this poem, and the facts that you hve obtained when writing about this particular colour. See this website: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple Why not also bring in about purple in nature, for there are many beautiful instances of the colour purple.
thanks

I associated it with the Tyrian purple of the border of a Roman toga when the wearer was a member of the Senate House. Also bishops. I'd forgotten about Lent.

I guess that Phil's thinking of Jenny Joseph's wonderful "When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me." As a tribute to that, there is a thriving Red Hat Society for ladies over 50. And they say poetry has no impact on real life...

Jenny Joseph - that's the one!
Thanks
