Hearts and Minds (swear words)

"Hearts and Minds"

it came out of Vietnam
did hearts and minds,
sounds good hey
sounds good.

first of all
you bomb the shit out of them
from above with your B52, silently
and don't forget that napalm, for
nothing smells better then
burning flesh on a slow
sunday morning stroll,
now we can have some local fun
artillery and a couple of
jolly green giants
gatling guns a blazing,
that should soften them up,
and just when they think it's over
we can send in our
brave infantry boys to
destroy what's left with a
little rape and torture
just to add a little spite,
and don't forget that body count boys
our figures must add up.

later

a week later
the tree huggers arrive
the medics and the
hearts and minds brigade,
showing concern, faces grim
asking questions, taking notes
nodding heads a plenty,
patching up wounds and
giving out food and sweets galore
then they leave.

later

it begins again
a fucking joke
is hearts and minds.

colloquial tone strong, irony as cutting as razor. well done, bernie!

The message is clear, with some sharp irony. But I didn't realy like the format of the middle part. Breaking off lines in the middle of a phrase, no rhyme and a strange rythm... It's probably just a matter of taste, but for me it detracted from the clever message. The first five and the last four are very strong though.

I'm often torn by your pieces Bernie, and this is one of them. Yes, it's powerful and it puts across its message well - however, this is one I reckon could be tackled as well, if not better, as prose. Any prose piece could still contain the poetic ideas you have here.

Plenty of dark humour and venom here. The lack of rhyme wasn't a problem for me as I didn't even notice.

Enjoyed.
thanks
