Dark ages
By Fledermaus

A bit romantizised, but then, so is the image we are presented of ancient Rome as well... A writing exercise rather than something which is completely historically correct.

After the collapse of Rome
People entered a dark age
Savage tribes sought a new home
When Atilla turned this page

Yet let us revise that chapter
For although empires fell
Mighty kings took the sceptre
It's of heroes stories tell

Unlike Romans who deceived
They placed honour above gold
Their word was to be believed
Loyalty was never sold

They were violent and wild
But also honest and just
Their rule not exactly mild
They deserved their people's  trust

Great Arthur of the Britons
Charlemagne of the Franks
The Vikings kings, Denmark's sons
The caliphs on Tigris' banks

Why are these called Dark Ages?
Those glory days of legend?
Let us rewrite those pages
About Etzel in his tent

Very romanticised. Why the dark ages? There are quite a few periods of history I'm pretty glad I didn't live through - The Dark Ages rank pretty highly. I wonder how our time will be seen in a few hundred years.

Ignorance abounds. Who was Etzel?

Hi Phil.
Etzel is the name of Atilla in the Niebelungenlied. Yet as it contains one syllable less, I it fitted here better.
I do think the dark ages were rather dark indeed, but all though they were warlike and murderous, it seems the people also had a certain ideals which seem to be lacking nowadays, and the stories dating from that period are amongst the best Europe has to offer.
Very romanticised indeed, and I'm glad I didn't live back then, but they're not the complete chaos that is presented in some history books.
