The relativity of cruelty
By BrianRobertNeal
22 July 2007
Main Verse.

His knife slashes the face and breasts,
Of a hapless young stewardess,
Whose crime was to wish a nice day?
Don’t try to excuse this away.

Coda

We’re told that “ends justify means”
If to barbarity means tends.
And their fundaments are obscene
Have the means not destroyed “the ends”?

Footnote.

However if barbarity
Is from you and suffered by me
It’s  crime against humanity.

Vice versa on the other hand
Is something really rather grand
As you all surely understand.

I think I've seen at least some of this before Brian.
Interesting set up. I got a little tied up in exact meaning. For me, the second and third need looking at in terms of precise punctuation, verb form and a missing word. I'll not embarrass myself by putting what I thought it should be as it could be my stupidity!

The first verse has a new fourth line.

As for punctuation etc, I claim poetic license!
Rhyme and syllable count being King and Queen.

A clue to verse 2: Idealists who terrorise and destroy their opponents in the name of "humanity" or Godliness.

Verse 3 and 4:when you something to me, it's an outrage, but if I do it to you it's justified.

It has 14 lines, have I invented a new sonnet form, two quatrains and two triplets?

Thanks for your time and comments,

Brian
