Addiction

Drink, shoot up, starve, hit, hurt, punch, pop a pill, slice your skin, throw up, steal, exercise, binge, lie, cheat, hide.

Do what it takes to get that high, that elation that removes you from the reality of your mediocre life.

Watch the world take extraordinary twists and turns, watch people conquer, achieve and move forward from their setbacks.

Watch of course, from the isolation that protects you and has always protected you.

With great risk comes either great failure or great achievement, why risk the failure?

Instead, remain safe in you isolation, remaining numb, clinging tightly to your addiction.

Be cautious in letting others too close, they will see your flaws, they may even challenge you to be something or someone of worth.

You don’t know how to be this.

If they can see your potential, they may prompt you to be great.

Don’t let those you love know you love them, because should they falter, they may turn to you for a strength you don’t have.

Disregard the opportunity for growth and change that the future only dangles before you under false pretence.

If you don’t have your addiction.

What is left?

The reality of time lost?

The discomfort of being exposed?

The day you must face yourself and yourself only is the day it all ends.

Your addiction is all you have, all you had, and all you know how to be.

This says an awful lot. I guess they are things that an addict will be familiar with - but also, through the media, so will your average Joe like me who has managed nothing stronger than fags and booze. I know learning second hand isn't the same as experiencing.

I think what I'm trying to say is - it presents a lot of things that are not new in a way that is not new. While the ideas carry a sad and powerful truth, the words lack bite and impact.

Others may see it differently. I hope so.

Phil.
