How do I delete

Postby jean.day » Sun Mar 04, 2012 9:54 am

Hi

I have written some things that I would like to delete, but am not sure how to go about it. When I go into the story, it offers me the chance to edit - but I can't find a delete button anywhere.

And when I do get replies from people on the site to my work, I no longer get emails telling me about it, even though I will have ticked the right box.

What I am doing wrong?

Hello Jean - on phpBB forums, once a posting has been replied to, you can't delete it. You can remove the content and / or replace it with the words "deleted" or "removed for editing" or something of that nature. Messiah and others have made fun of this but it's simply the nature of the software. There's nothing we can do about that unless we give all members "delete permissions", but those include being able to delete other people's postings so we are not likely to do that. What I'm saying is, it isn't your fault!

You only get one reminder that people have replied to your work in a forum that you've subscribed to, since you last logged out. The old GW used to send one reminder if someone posted after you logged out but this one seems only to send one, full stop. I am assuming that you are subscribed to the forums you post in, as well as ticking the "notify me" box below. If not, you can subscribe via "My Profile". Again, it isn't anything you have done wrong - it's just the way the forums work.

Thanks Sue

I am not sure how one goes about subscribing to the forums. I was referring to just normal posts in Non Fiction or Extended and certainly haven't subscribed to them. Is that what you are calling phpBB forums?

Hi Jean,

I guesss this is how I would do it:

1) Log in.
2) Select the post you wish to delete.
3) click on the 'edit' tab at the top of your text box.
4) Highlight all of the text you wish delete and hit the delete key on your keyboard.
5) Enter nothing or whatever explanation you wish to leave behind.
6) Click the 'preview' tab at the foot of the post you have edited.
7) if satisfied, click the 'Submit' tab at the foot of your post.

Good luck.

PS No doubt someone here will correct me if I am wrong.

The software that runs this site is called PHP BB, so my comments apply to the whole site, Jean.

To subscribe to a section or forum (eg Poetry or Short Stories) you can use the Subscriptions option in My Profile (top menu).

OR, go to the forum itself (Poetry or SS or Non Fiction etc) using the list on the front page, and scroll to the bottom and click "Subscribe". You then get one notification when anyone posts anything after you last visited that forum. Just one.

You've probably only ticked the box on your own posts that says "Notify me when a reply is posted" - am I right? You get one notification if there's been a reply to that posting since your last visit. At least - in theory that's what happens!

Thanks again Sue, and Sylvester

When I went into My Profile and clicked on organising subscriptions, it turned out that most of my writing is listed there, so I must have subscribed without knowing that I was doing it. I also found the thing on the bottom of the page of the work in progress where you can unsubscribe, so presumably, before that I could opt to subscribe. But that seems to me that it means that the system is not working, as I have had several comments on my work, and haven't had an email telling me about them for months. But as I look back when I come on the site, I pick them up eventually, so it isn't really a problem.

Thanks again.

Hmm, that confirms a suspicion I had about this new software. I'm not sure we can do anything to improve that, but I'll pass it on to Mike (Ed) for discussion and maybe find out if there is an upgrade that addresses the glitch.

Try Drupal (instead of phpBB). It's cool (see? I speak like a web monkey, so that proves I know what I'm talking about) and makes for a more friendly environment.

Thanks NHB, but it gave Ed quite enough work to transfer the old GW site to the present software. I don't think we shall be spending that much time again to address one relatively small glitch.

The settings in the files that run the site may hold a clue to it. I gather from the phpBB support forum that it's not an uncommon problem with phpBB.
