Thank you Brett

As I said to Sue, there was a lot of youthful bravado in my tackling the Wake. I know some of my young acquaintances in the earlier course on the moderns were probably more interested in the dirty bits in Ulysses than the language .

I had an interest myself , if it comes to that!

Lack of speech marks never bothered me much -- I was willing to accept the stream of consciousness style from the first -- and the chaotic(?) dream language presented more of a challenge still.

Good fun, like cryptic crosswords !

Got hold of a copy of A portrait of the artist as a young man yesterday. A few other things to read first - but now on the reading list. 25p from a charity shop - bargain!

(Best be worth it, Brian. )

Hope you enjoy it Phil-- but I must warn you that the last person to whom I recommended a piece of Joyce's writing, in that case, -Dubliners -, was not enthralled by his epiphanies . But you might like the phil osophical discussions in Portrait.

Each to his taste.

Good afternoon Brian,

I found the history behind your name very interesting. I have never read anything by Joyce. I always intended to, but somehow, when in the library, other books seemed to get my interest. I remember one time I was in the section of a library which specialised in Irish authors and I was about to pull out, The Dubliners when another book caught my eye, 'The Third Policeman.' This was an interesting story, but at the time I found it very hard to read although I think I managed to finish it. After that I decided to have a break from Irish authors and sadly I never got around to Joyce.
If I recall correctly, the next book I read was Frans Bengtsson's, The Longships. This resulted in me giving our cats Viking names!

Kind Regrds

That thesis Brett , typed inexpertly on an old British Empire Portable with clumsy footnotes added (so elegantly ;) in red)-- while some other candidates had their work printed and hard cover bound !

I have kept an eye on the Swift /Joyce theme since I got my access to the internet -- and not much further development has taken place there. The major relationships have been covered , and all that remains is deeper forensics. Anyway, a revision, retype etc would be a bit beyond me today, and it is all too fragile to just photocopy.

But thanks for the flattering idea.

As long as I can get some of the misguided back on track, I am happy.

I must admit to being a little curious about the thesis, too; but not having read Joyce, I don't know if I'd get much out of it.

Thanks for the explanation - very interesting.

Thanks ainsel.
You are closer than any other poster geographically to being able to read it - were I willing to resurrect the poor battered thing . That is not likely though, as i know the kind of people you type for. You would be horrified at my stumbling efforts at twenty years of age.

Much obliged for the insight/background. I'd offer some about my name but there's nothing interesting about it, just my initials.

Thanks TJW --I posted it not as a matter of any great importance but as a refutation of another poster's foolish insistence that the pen name be linked to a dog breed.
