Powell was a well educated and skilful writer. This was a very writerly speech, stylistically quite different from the language and narrative used by modern politicians; but I am not going to speculate about why you have posted it.

Could be interesting - this is the right forum for it, after all

I don't mind immigrants who work, nor people of a different skin colour and enthicity, many of whom were born in Britain.

I don't have a single viewpoint on this topic, for several reasons. One is that while one part of my family tree is solidly Lancastrian, another branch is French, another German, and yet another I suspect is Irish. If you trace back three generations, I am more than half an immigrant.

Also, I live in an area where you're not a "local" till you've got 3 generations in the churchyard. And here, again, I'm an "incomer". Different word, same implication.

Also, we rent out our converted barn to whoever wishes to have a holiday here... and many of those who visit us are "not English" - Pakistani, Indian, Korean, Japanese, Kenyan, Zimbabwean, Nigerian, North American, Australian, New Zealanders. Many of them are working in Britain. And so far they have been delightful. The only miserable and dissatisfied customers we've had have been... er... English ones.

I do get annoyed by telephone cold-calls from people who speak too fast with an accent I can't understand... but that includes Scottish as well as Indian!

I therefore find it very difficult to argue on the topic of immigration.

(Confused Newbie ) Sorry not sure how to react to this , am I commenting on its literal content or its political connotations.If however this particular page is the place for overtly political opinion then fair enough.
Personally I have always found this speech to be the mantra of the Daily Mail reading little Englander brigade , always quick to oppose racism ,and yet incapable of understanding their English immigrant DNA.As history shows us the blame for all that is wrong with the world ( according to the Right )falls at the feet of the immigrant, always the first culprit in their blinkered view of the world.WE ARE ALL IMMIGRANTS .......

just so you know 'Keef' is not me, I insert this from Wiki. (I wonder if the Times would have the same opinion under it's present owner - at least up until last week):

One of the West Indians who was cut, a Mr Wade Crooks of Lower Villiers Street, was the child's grandfather. He had to have eight stitches over his left eye. He was reported as saying "I have been here since 1955 and nothing like this has happened before. I am shattered.

As I said under your original poem that has started this, this is a creative writing forum not a political one, but as you seem to have the bone and are gnawing on it - how do you stand with genuine refugees who may not be able to offer anything to the country right off but are in genuine danger: genocide for instance? What if the world had taken this view in the 1930s with the Jews having to flee Nazi Germany?

I am a simple man,and I call a spade a spade,I am just like the majority of men in this country.I may not be as well educated as you,I simply speak as I find. This is not a political site agreed,but this forum is called "the soap box" so I think that I am airing my views in the correct place?

As far as "Nazi Germany" and the Jews are concerned,Great Britain,"The police man for the world"and our war monger oil greedy friends would never let this situation happen again,would we?

Genuine refugees with nothing to offer? I'm sorry but we are full,please get on the next bus.
